Fancy starting an online jewelry business but do not know how? Well, this article walks you step-by-step on how to build a jewelry business online.
For me, the most rewarding part of knowing how to build a business online is getting to teach other people how they could also build a successful business around just about anything they love.
I neither have any in-depth knowledge nor real interest in jewelry to be honest but since you are reading this, my guess is you are into jewelry and looking to start a jewelry business online.
In this article, I will be outlining the steps to go about it and this goes to show that you do not have to be an expert to build a successful business in any niche whatsoever.
Let’s get into things here…
How To Start an Online Jewelry Business
There are 4 simple steps required to build any kind of business online:
- Pick a niche
- Build a website
- Write content and get traffic
- Monetize your website
Now let us dig into each of these steps and relate it to building a successful jewelry business.
*You can get so much more in-depth training on these steps in my top recommendation.
Step 1: Pick a Niche
If you came here looking to learn how to start a jewelry business online, you are in better shape than most people that want to build an online business. At least, you know the topic you want your business to be about.
Most people who are interested in building an online business have no clue what kind of business they want to build. In your case, you have a huge topic you are interested in: Jewelry.
Your job as an online business owner (OBO) is to provide solutions to people. So ask yourself these questions: What kind of people am I going to be providing solutions to? What kind of problems do they have? What exactly are they looking for?
“Jewelry” is a topic to start from, but it is not a niche. Jewelry could be anything from gold necklaces to wooden bracelets. Articles on gold necklaces will not help someone looking for information on wooden bracelets, even though they both fall under jewelry.
The key to finding a profitable niche is to drill deep into your topic and provide solutions that are specific to your target audience. The more you drill deep into the topic, the greater your chances of your audience finding you. What we want is a niche that is not too competitive, gets a decent number of searches and a lot of content can be written on.
Like we would expect, just “jewelry” would be a very terrible niche choice. If you do a Google search of that term, you will find many high authority e-commerce sites that sell jewelry and I can tell you it is almost impossible to outrank those sites. Our best bet of building a successful jewelry business is drilling deep into “jewelry” and finding a niche with real income potential and far less competition.
Below is a search I did with the WA Keyword tool. You could also carry out this process with the free version of Jaaxy.
The term “jewelry” receives a huge number of searches per month but like we would expect, the competition is huge as well. All the other terms in the screenshot also have a high number of searches but the competition for each of them is still too strong, especially for you that is just starting out.
I think a high proportion of the people searching for “jewelry” are simply looking for the nearest jewelry stores and not looking to read any information on jewelry. I usually advocate for competition under 300 but the closer it is to zero, the better.
After a bit of thinking of ideas related to jewelry and also messing around with the keyword tool, I found “amber jewelry” to be a pretty good niche choice. It ticks all our boxes of low competition (less than 300), gets a decent number of searches per month (3122 searches) and it is wide enough to write lots of content on it.
Of course, this is only one possible niche choice. There are many other niches I found that you could choose from like vintage costume jewelry, crystal bridal jewelry, men’s jewelry bracelets…The list is never-ending.
Now let’s do a search of our niche choice “amber jewelry”…
From this screenshot, I can see that there is room to write a lot of content. There are many amber jewelry products I can review and the searches from these do add up. This makes “amber jewelry” a great niche choice.
**Remember it is better to rank on search engines for a keyword that has 20 searches a month than to be on the second or third page for a keyword that gets 20,000 searches a month. It is better to have 20 people look for your keyword and actually see your content than have 20,000 people look for your keyword and not find your content.
Step 2: Build a Website
Unfortunately, most people think a lot of technical expertise is needed to own a website. This reason is solely responsible for the uneasiness beginners feel at the prospect of building a website.
I always say there isn’t so much “building” involved these days, but more of “clicking”. Don’t believe me? Fill in a name in the website builder below and you own a FREE website…
And by the way, the free account you just created comes with 2 free websites and an entire training platform and community – something to help you get started with your online jewelry business.
Step 3: Write Content and Get Traffic
In a website about “amber jewelry”, what sort of content would you be writing? First thing that comes to mind, reviews! In my experience, reviews turn out to be the most profitable posts.
If someone knew a particular product of amber jewelry that they were not 100% sure about, what would they do? They would go on Google or any search engine and look up a review of this product they were not sure of. The review they find is supposed to give them detailed information about the product and help them make a decision on whether to make the purchase or not.
This is where you come in. These people looking for information are “traffic” and you provide what they are looking for. The more you write detailed quality posts, the more search engines trust you with high rankings. Higher rankings lead to higher traffic because whenever these people search for these reviews, they find you.
If you came here specifically looking to build a jewelry business, there is a good chance you have had first-hand experience with some jewelry products. Start with these products because they will make the best reviews. You can also review products you have not tried yourself, but make sure you do enough research to provide your readers with accurate and detailed information.
Reviews are just one kind of content you could write. You could also write informative articles like “what is the best amber necklace under $200”. Make your content as diverse as possible within your niche, but always have the welfare of your audience in mind.
More content leads to more trust from search engines, which lead to more rankings and greater reach. The summary is more content leads to more traffic.
Step 4: Monetize your Site
Most of your traffic are already in the buying mood. They already have a product in mind and all they need is that little confirmation to purchase the product or not.
In most cases if you give a positive review to a product, the customers click straight from your website to make the purchase. They click through your affiliate link and when they make the purchase, you get a commission.
If you do not recommend a product, let your readers know why you would not recommend the product and direct them to a product you would recommend.
You might be wondering where on earth you should get these affiliate links from? Well there are many affiliate networks around that manage many affiliate programs. Some of these networks are Linkshare, Shareasale, Commission Junction and much more. Amazon has an affiliate program called Amazon Associates and you could find many more affiliate programs by doing a Google search of “your niche + affiliate programs”. In this case, “amber jewelry affiliate programs”.
As a beginner, I strongly suggest you join Amazon Associates. It is easy to join, they have the largest pool of products anywhere on the internet and everyone trusts Amazon. You get commissions on purchase made of other products unrelated to the product you recommend and they let you use the pictures of the product you are promoting for free.
The gist of monetization is:
More content -> More traffic -> More clicks on your affiliate link -> More money
