If you are here, my guess is you are strongly contemplating one of two things:
- You want to make money off some of your current pieces of clothing, possibly because they are too old or not your size anymore. OR
- You are looking for a business opportunity where you can earn money promoting clothes online.
If you belong to the first category, the solution to your plight is very simple.
List the clothes you want to sell on eBay or Craigslist. If you are in Canada, you can list your items on Kijiji. You will have to set a buy-now price on eBay or open an auction. It is pretty easy to navigate. It is free to post on Kijiji and Craigslist, while you get 50 free listing on eBay per month after which you are charged 30 cents per listing. I hope this has helped you. If you are interested in what I have for folks in the second category, feel free to stick around.
If you belong to the second category, you are the one this post is really about. I am going to start from the basics, and show you how you can create a business opportunity for yourself by selling clothes online.
How to Start A Business Selling Clothes Online…
At this point you know what it is you want be selling, which is very good.
The first step to building a business is coining out a niche. We are going to have to dig down from “selling clothes online” to a niche that is less competitive, has a decent number of searches, but still broad enough to write unique content on.
Whilst it is not impossible to rank for “selling clothes online”, it is going to be extremely difficult due to the high level competition for that keyword. This is even more difficult for someone who is a complete newbie when it comes to building a business online.
Below are screenshots of a search I did using the WA Keyword Tool.
Not surprisingly, the phrase “clothes online” has a high number of searches which is good, but proportionally high competition as well. The closer the competition is to zero, the better.
Looking at the related terms, we realize that we could either narrow the word “clothes” in terms of gender or age. Now we could zoom in and start looking at men’s clothes, women’s clothes or baby clothes. These phrases still remain competitive, so we will have to dig in a little bit deeper. If we decide to go down the line of women’s clothes, we can get a few more ideas.
Of course, it’s totally up to you which direction you decide to go. You could go with men’s clothes, baby clothes, toddler shirts….whichever way you choose.
After a bit of playing around using the alphabet soup technique and the keyword tool, I found a keyword “slim lace wedding dresses” with very little competition. This term “slim lace wedding dresses” could now serve as a potential niche idea.
Other niche ideas I can think of off the back of my head are plus size wedding dresses, band t-shirts online, costumes for tall men, blazers for tall women, toddler baseball jerseys, etc.
There are literally millions of niche ideas you could come up with within the clothing industry.
This keyword has very little competition, but not a lot of searches.
Let me get this off my chest now before it is too late: It is better to rank on the first page of Google for a keyword that has 40 searches a month, than to be on the third page for a keyword that get 40,000 searches a month.
You would be surprised if you knew how many people find the answers to what they are looking for on the first page, so they have no reason to go to the second or third page.
Anyway, back to our keyword 🙂 . If your niche is Slim Lace Wedding Dresses, what sort of content will you be writing?
Let’s visit the screenshot again. Notice the related search terms under our keyword search term. “Antique lace wedding dresses” has 112 searches per month on average, and a competition score of 85. This low competition means a great post on “Antique lace wedding dresses” could easily rank on page one of Google. How about “simple lace wedding dress” and “vintage lace wedding dresses”?
As you produce content on all these keywords, your traffic adds up. Additional traffic leads to more money.
Now that we have brainstormed on a niche, what next?
Next step is to actually build a website. This website serves as your online business office literally. I’m not going to bore you with the website building stuff in this post. Here is the post on how to build your website. It is super easy and literally takes less than a minute.
After building your website, the next thing you are going to do is start building content.
Your niche should be an area you are passionate and somewhat knowledgeable about. So think of products within your niche and write out content promoting them. In our case, we will be writing content promoting different kinds of wedding dresses. You do not have to be a professional writer to do this. Just write naturally, and as you do this more often you will get better.
There is no such thing as a perfect article! The more content you write, the more chances you get to get ranked, getting ranked leads to traffic, and traffic ultimately leads to money.
There are a couple of SEO techniques and tricks you will want to learn for optimum results in your online business. Get hooked up with the right tools and training for free now.
I’m sure you must be thinking “Where do I get the products I’m supposed to promote?”. This is where the money is.
To get commissions for products you promote, you will need to sign up for an affiliate program. There are a ton of affiliate programs that carry an abundance of products in their catalog. Some of these are Linkshare, Shareasale, Commission Junction, Affiliate Window, Amazon, eBay, etc.. Even some designers and online retail stores have their own independent affiliate programs you can join.
How this works is you head out to a product listed on their database (or website), obtain an affiliate link, post that affiliate link on your website, and you get a commission for every sale that accrues from that link. The good thing is you still get commission for anything they purchase after clicking your link, even if it is not the product you promoted in the first place.
So there you go. You now know how you can earn money selling clothing online.
Do you have any questions you would like to ask, or any thoughts you would like to share? Just pop it in the comments, and I will be more than happy to help you out. Cheers!

I’m already a WA user and I see you refer to that in your instructions so even better have another use for my account.
Thanks some really helpful tips on how to make money selling clothes online.

Hey Nate,
I’m glad you found this post of good help to you. I think everything in this post will apply to selling handbags, except that we will go about the niche research differently. I have also written a fun post on starting a coffee business online, which has a step-by-step guide that might help you. Who knows, maybe I will be writing one on selling handbags soon.
Since you are in WA, you will probably have all the knowledge you need very soon anyway.
Cheers,
Amedu
